Keeping Belfast Giants on the ice despite a last-minute flight cancellation

The challenge

Travel for a professional ice hockey team leaves little room for error, and match days leave even less. In March, the Belfast Giants were due to fly out ahead of a fixture scheduled for later that same day when their outbound flight was cancelled because of weather.

The cancellation left the squad without a way to reach their destination, with the clock running down to the match. Availability on alternative services was limited, and a full squad travelling together needs far more than a handful of spare seats.

Solution

As soon as the cancellation came through, the Sports Pro Travel team started working through every alternative open to the Giants. With availability so limited, rebooking passengers onto other flights was not going to be enough on its own.

Instead, the team went straight to the airline and used established industry contacts to look for another way. That conversation led to the airline advising an aircraft swap, so the team could still get away in time for their match later that day.

Results

Thanks to the aircraft swap, the Belfast Giants reached their destination with minimal disruption and in time for their match. For the coaching staff and players, a cancelled flight on match day became a managed change of plan rather than a missed fixture.
